A Brief History of the Khanqah
The Chishtia Niazia Khanqah in Toronto, Canada traces its roots to the spiritual traditions of the Chishtia Niazia Sufi order. For more than 27 years, it has served as a center for worship, remembrance of Allah, Islamic learning, hospitality, and community service.
Founded under the guidance of respected spiritual elders and community leaders, including the caretaker Al-Hajj Noor Mohammad Khan Alkozi, the Khanqah has been a place where disciples gather for spiritual devotion, night vigils, and remembrance of God.
A Khanqah is a traditional gathering place for Sufi followers and spiritual guides, where worship, teaching, accommodation, and spiritual training are practiced alongside free hospitality for guests.
Traditions of the Khanqah
About 27 years ago, the Khanqah was located in the rear section of a large marketplace in Toronto. Disciples and visitors gathered there every Thursday and on the 11th day of each lunar month for Dhikr, Qur'anic learning, spiritual reflection, and fellowship.
The Khanqah also hosted literary and spiritual gatherings dedicated to great Sufi figures such as Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi and Abdul Qadir Bedil, where poetry was recited, discussed, and appreciated.
Since around 2019, the Khanqah has been relocated to: 1853 Lawrence, Toronto, where Sufis continue to gather for spiritual devotion, mystical prayers, Qawwali recitations, and overnight worship.
Chishti Spiritual Practice
In the Chishti order, adherence to Sharia comes before the spiritual path (Tariqa). Disciples follow their spiritual guide's instructions and engage in prescribed forms of remembrance (dhikr), either silently or aloud, at designated times.
These practices are traced through a spiritual chain reaching the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Imam Ali (peace be upon him). While "La ilaha illa Allah" is the highest remembrance, additional invocations are given under the guidance of the spiritual master.
Sama (Spiritual Music) Gatherings
Every Thursday, Sama gatherings are held with devotional music performed using instruments such as harmonium, rubab, tabla, and zerbaghali. These sessions include spiritually uplifting Sufi songs and devotional recitations.
Special gatherings also take place on the 11th day of each lunar month, attracting large numbers of disciples and visitors. Free meals are prepared and served by volunteers to all attendees during these occasions.
